QIC Tape Cartridge and Drive Information

Overview
Your QIC tape drive is an integral part of your iSeries (AS400) network
server. You must backup nightly and clean the tape drive weekly.
IBS recommends one tape for each day of the week that you are open, two end
of month tapes, one annual end of year tape and one tape cleaning cartridge
- Daily tapes: label MONDAY, TUESDAY, WEDNESDAY, and so on (rotate these
tapes nightly)
- Monthly tapes: label them MONTH 1 and MONTH 2 (use monthly at end of
month).
- Yearly tape: once a year you need to save
your information and store the tape for as long as your CPA deems necessary(1)
- Cleaning tape: You should clean your tape drive weekly. It could
extend the life of your tape drive and tapes by years.

We are sometimes asked? Can I save money by using fewer tapes?
- While your business could survive on as few as two tapes switched every
night we never recommend it.
- What would happen if one or both tapes broke and/or did not get a good
back-up.
- Remember that you never need to use the back-up until it is too late to
make one. An ounce of prevention may save you (and us) many hours of cure.
- We cannot stress the importance of multiple tapes enough.
- Finally you need to have one tape that you take off site every night (or
at least every week). If your lumberyard burns down tonight we can
rebuild your valued inventory in the morning!
