General CD-Rom Installation Guide
CD-ROM Installation
Hardware Installation
1. Turn off the computer and all peripherals, and unplug the computer's power
cord. Remove the computer's casing by removing the 3 to 6 screws holding it in
place.
2. Place the CD-ROM drive in any open standard (Packard bell and Compac
Computers require special attachments) 5.25" drive bay.
3. Depending on your individual case, do one of the following:
➥ If mounting rails are necessary for drive installation, attach the rails to
the device and slide the drive into the half height drive bay.
➥ If mounting rails are not required, secure the drive into an open half-height
drive bay using the four screws included with your CD-ROM kit.
4. Connect the 4-pin drive power cable (direct from your computers power supply)
and 40-pin interface cable with the red stripe corresponding to pin 1.
➥ If you are using a soundcard, you may wish to attach the audio cable to the
soundcard. Depending on the interface card and data cable you are using, do one
of the following:
5. If your interface card is an IDE card and you have only one hard disk drive:
➥ If there are two slots on your data cable, simply connect the CD-ROM drive to
the open slot.
➥ If there is only one slot on your data cable, replace the cable with a two
slot cable. Then connect the CD-ROM to the open slot.
➥ If your interface card is an IDE card and you have two hard disk drives:
6. First make sure that your primary controller card is not an Enhanced IDE Card
(See 2.2 - Identifying an E-IDE card)
7. Use the IDE interface or sound card (if included with your CD-ROM kit). For
486 PCs and below, replace your IDE I/O card with an enhanced IDE card.
8. Put the computer case cover back on.
9. Re-Attach the computer's power cord then turn on your computer.
Windows 95/98 Software Installation
1. Turn on your computer and allow it to boot up normally. Windows 95/98 will
auto-configure the CD-Rom Drive without additional software.
☞ You can check the drive by double clicking on My Computer (displayed as an
icon on your desktop) next review the drives listed. If no CD-Rom appears then
there is a hardware configuration error. Call your service provider for
technical assistance.
Dos/ Win3x Software Installation
☞ In order to use your CD-ROM drive, you must first properly install its device
drivers onto your computer. The procedure for installation is as follows:
1. Turn on your computer with DOS booting instead of Windows.
2. Insert the CD-ROM device driver disk in a floppy disk drive.
3. At the command prompt, type the drive letter the disk is in (A:)
4. Run the installation program usually either INSTALL.EXE or SETUP.EXE.
5. Follow the on screen prompts and instructions.
6. You may be presented the option to use Express Setup or Custom Setup. It is
recommended that you use the Express Setup; however, experienced users may
prefer Custom Setup.
