IBM Infowindow Troubleshooting Guide

Problem Possible Cause(s) Suggested Resolution(s)
No sound when turned on or no power to the LED light
  • Power cord loose, or no AC
  • Bad power supply in Logic Unit
  • Replace AC power cord and verify source power ok.
  • Replace logic unit
Power OK but no video displays
  • Monitor is turned off
  • Loose or unplugged video connector
  • Monitor adjustment turned too low to view screen
  • Turn on monitor
  • Reseat the video connector
  • Adjust knobs on monitor
Cursor in the upper right of screen
  • No signal received on twinax line, or wrong address in terminal setup
  • Cursor upper right after troubleshooting address and twinax signal
  • Detach Y-conn, restart, when cursor upper right, press Alt+CMD12, (will get inverse video) Reconnect twinax y-conn cbl. if screen changes, try a different address, if screen stays the same (inverse video), still no signal...change BALUN, patch cbl, or twinax cable.
  • Move base LU only to different location, if pbm. follows base, replace base, if pbm. stays at location, go to troubleshoot cables, and addresses again.
Cursor is in the upper left (no characters appear when typing)
  • Cable problem
  • Check the entire line and see where the cable break or disconnected cable is.
Cursor is in the upper left (characters appear when typing)
  • Twinax cable is bad or weak
  • Check the entire line and see where the cable break or disconnected cable is.
Cursor bounces from left to right
  • Terminal attempting to connect to a used (active) address
  • Change the address in the terminal setups to an unused address
Keyboard works but strange (or wrong) characters appear on the display
  • Keyboard is loose or not properly connected
  • Bad keyboard
  • Keyboard type is not matched on the host or remote control unit (remote controller)
  • Verify cable connection to Logic Unit
  • Replace keyboard
  • Check terminal setups
Garbage (strange characters) appear throughout the screen
  • Twinax cable or end is weak or damaged
  • Test and replace problem twinax end(s)
Keyboard won't respond and logic unit beeps when typing
  • An error messages is flashing in the lower left corner
  • Macro recorder was left on, shows R???? below status line
  • A key on the keyboard is jammed or being held down by an object
  • Press the reset key
  • Delete the problem Funtion-Key (CMD) or turn off macro record function
  • Swap keyboards
  • Sign-off terminal then cycle power
Terminal session drops line, reboots to sign-on screen losing all activity
  • Check power cable voltage
  • Low power or electrical problem
  • Problem twinax cable
  • Twinax end is loose
  • Swap power cables
  • Move terminal power cable to different outlet
  • Replace twinax end
  • Replace twinax cable
Terminal causes other terminals on line to fail
  • Configured address may already be in use by another device
  • Twinax line or connector may not be terminated
  • Replace twinax Y or T connector
  • Check for cable or twinax end problem
  • Move logic unit to another port on the AS400. If problem follows base replace unit
Terminal drops off line to cursor in upper right
  • Defective or loose twinax end
  • Defective cable
  • Check lines, ends and baluns to see if one is loose or weak.
Terminal drops offline to cursor in the upper left and characters appear when typing
  • Terminal lost power or was turned off/on while still in use
  • Vary off, cycle power then vary on the terminal.
  • If it still doesn't work vary the device off, delete the device description then cycle power to let it be configured again
Terminal makes a buzzing sound
  • Terminal is dead
  • Replace logic unit
Terminal beeps constantly when turned and gets no video
  • Ram memory is damaged or loose from memory slot
  • Reseat then replace memory chips
Blank screen when using passthru but works OK when local
  • Wrong display emulation selected
  • Reconfigure terminal to 132 column emulation (3197D, 3477, 3486, 3487 or 3488)
5488V drops offline back to signon screen when using shared addressing
  • Wrong emulation type selected
  • Delete the device descriptions for the terminal displays then let autoconfig recreate them
Terminal will not exit setup screen
  • Printer session configured but no display session
  • Cycle power to logic unit. Hold down spacebar during reboot to enter setups and correct the error
Attached printer will not print
  • No printer session configured
  • Printer session and device configures on host but doesn't print
  • Configure printer session in terminal setups
  • Troubleshoot cable and printer
Attached printer will not print and cannot start writer
  • Printer is offline
  • Verify that the printer ready light is on
Attached printer will not print, cannot start writer Printer ready but no System available indicator (Online setup "Browse printer information" selection) The printer is not using the correct address, or another device is using this address...correct address conflict, and/or re-connect twinax cable.
Device type mismatch Delete old printer device, recycle pwr on base LU/printer let AS400 autoconfig create new printer device at that address, or manually create printer device on host. (If using remote controller, see controller manual for adding new device)
Address conflict Another twinax device was/is configured to use this address, delete/ re-create the device, use different address.
Prints, but not correctly Device type mismatch Delete old printer device on host configuration...recreate device
Wrong printer type selected Select the correct printer on the PRINTER CONFIGURATION menu in off-line setup
Not using Host Print transform Enable Host Print Transform, (*YES) and select the right AS400 driver for this printer in the device configuration.
Puts "garbage" characters on printout Match host print transform driver, within device configuration, with the model/type of the printer. Match printer emulation with device configuraiton on host, and/or replace parallel printer cable.
