- The actual Windows Security Center control panel extension uses
C:\Windows\System32\wscui.cpl
- The "XP Security Center" malware's control panel extension uses
C:\Windows\System32\_scui.cpl
(at least on this system)
You can simply
delete the
C:\Windows\System32\_scui.cpl
but that will then remove the Windows Security Center from your Control
Panel. To restore you Windows Security Center icon to the Control Panel you need
to use use the registry editor and
locate HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\don't
load. In there you should see and entry for
wscui.cpl; and you will need to delete
it. After deleting the entry restart the computer and it should be back
to normal. If it is still not working go to
Start >
Run > type sevices.msc and press
enter.
Look through the list and verify that the "Secuity Center" service is started
and it is set to "Automatic".
After Windows Security Center is working again you will want to open it and
check the settings using the link on left named "Change the way Security Center
alerts me" and verify that all the boxes are checked for Windows Security Center
to monitor.
