EIDE & IDE Disk Drives

How stuff works video

What does IDE stand for?

IDE stands for Integrated Drive Electronics.

  • It's purpose is to provide a fast and easy interface for the IBM PC. The IDE interface has been adopted as the industry standard for Hard Drive and CD-ROM drive interfaces. The CD-ROM you have purchased uses this standard to interface with your computer. The IDE/ATAPI interface allows the CD-ROM drive to share the same data bus and interface card as your present hard drive, or can be operated on its own IDE interface card.
