Create a Save System Tape

Starting

Readme First

  • 'ALL CAPS' and 'lowercase' letters do not matter when keying in the information.  You can type in either one of them.
  • You should prep two tapes for the save procedure even if you only use one of them.

Basic Steps for complete Save/Restore

  • Step 1 - Initialize (prep) 2 tapes
    Approximate time for this step is 10 minutes.
     
  • Step 2 - Save the data
    Approximate time for this step is 2-5 hours.
     
  • Step 3 - Restore the data (if rebuilding)
    Approximate time for this step is 2-5 hours.

Step 1 - Initialize Tapes

Please note that either of these methods will work.  It doesn't matter whether you initialize from menu MP 1, 15 or a command line.

Initialize from the menu method

  • Go to MENU MP 1 (End of Day)
  • Select option 16 (Initialize a tape)
  • Change the following then press ENTER.
    • Check for active files to *NO
    • Tape Density *CTGTYPE
  • If you get an error message call IBS
  • If the process completed successfully continue to step 2

Initialize from a command line

  • type in the following on a command line (you can copy and paste from command from below)

    INZTAP DEV(TC) NEWVOL(IBMIRD) CHECK(*NO) DENSITY(*CTGTYPE)

  • If you get an error message call IBS
  • If the process completed successfully continue to step 2

Step 2 - Save the system

  • Sign everyone off the system
  • Check your system inactive job timeout.
    • type wrksysval qinactitv then press ENTER.
    • type a '2' (Change) then press ENTER.
    • Change the value to *none if it is currently set to anything else.  If the value for QINACTITV is other than *NONE, the workstation will vary off in the amount of time specified. If you changed the value to *NONE, write the old value down.
  • Go to the system console 'W1' and continue all other steps from there. 
    YOU CANNOT PROCEED IF YOU ARE NOT ON THE SYSTEM CONSOLE!
  • Put the 1st tape you initialized from Step 1 into the tape drive then close the drive door
  • Go to Display Session 'W1' on the console
  • Sign on as 'QSECOFR'
    • if you are unsure how to signon as QSECOFR then call IBS
  • on the command line type 'go save' then press ENTER
  • Select option 21 (page down if you want to see it) and press ENTER.
  • When the alert message screen prompts press ENTER.
  • Key in the following fields then press ENTER.
    • Tape device --> tc
    • Prompt for commands --> n (no)
    • Message queue deliver --> *notify
  • If an error message appears or the system put you back to a command line within 10 minutes call IBS
  • If the system completes successfully the message 'SAVE OR RESTORE COMMAND COMPLETED SUCCESSFULLY' will display below the command line.
